Lorry Dimensions and Sizes: Making the Right Choice

Many of our clients here at Mega Movers are concerned with making the right choices as to lorry dimensions prior to making a lorry truck rental. While we do provide excellent guides upon consultation and upon actual booking of our services, we also offer some valuable tips below.

What can fit in a 1 tone lorry size?

A 1 tone lorry size can fit certain items adequately, especially if these items have been stacked correctly. For the following items, you need not go for a 3 tons lorry size or a 5 tonne lorry size, which can be more expensive. A 1 ton lorry size is already sufficient:

In terms of loading a bed into a 1-ton lorry, bed sizes will still matter a lot. Thus, a king-sized bed (6×6) typically will not fit into a 1 tone lorry size truck. It is suggested that you go for a bigger-sized lorry.

For wardrobes, their height and weight must also be taken into consideration in relation to the doorway size of the old space and the new space. If the wardrobe doesn’t fit into the door, this will have to be disassembled and reassembled accordingly.

Which lorry dimensions and number of movers are recommended for certain spaces?

In terms of choosing the right size for your lorry rental, it helps to consider the following helpful tips:

  • Condominium or apartment with elevator/terraced house
    • 3 tone lorry size (14 feet) with at least 3 movers
  • Semi-detached house, townhouse, or bungalow
    • 3 tons lorry size (17 feet) with at least 3 movers
  • Flat with elevator
    • 1 tone lorry size with 2 movers

Another helpful pro tip is to know beforehand if height restrictions are being enforced on the loading bay of high-rise buildings. If such restrictions do exist, then it will be important to consider the height of the lorry truck, regardless if it’s a 5 tone lorry size or 10 tone lorry size. If the truck doesn’t satisfy height requirements, then it will have to park outside, with a trolley needed to move the items in and out of the lorry truck.
